Learning Chinese, and in particular Mandarin, may well be one of the best investments of your time, as China emerges as a world power it will enable you to both communicate and do business with the Chinese and look very excellent on a resume. But, there are several difficulties that a native English speaker has if you choose to learn Chinese.
1) Small common ground with English
Learning how to speak Chinese is hard firstly because there are very few words that sound similar to the English equivalent. By way of comparison, you already have hundreds if you were to learn French, if not thousands of words that have a similar root word and are therefore essentially the same. For example:
